-
- How do I change the default papersize in pagesetup. It comes default on
- US Letter, but since the rest of the world (including me) uses A4 Letter
- I would like that to be the default.
-
- *small flame on* Why is there no PageSetup-Setup so you can change any
- default to the one you would like it to be. Even for the Mac users in
- the US I can imagine there are some who would like the default to be
- f.i. US Legal or such. I'd rather not have to change from US Letter to

- After 5-6 hours of consecutive work last night with my Mac II (with
- no problems after 2.5 months) I ran into problems booting this morning.
- The first time I powered on I did NOT get the Boot Chime and none of the
- usual procedure occurred. The screen was lit but nothing happened,
- neither the interrupt button nor the reset button (!) nor the 'power'
- button in the very back had any effect. Only by using my power strip was

- booted normally and seemed to behave ok. I tried a couple more times and
- it seemed flakey, including one time where it got pretty far in the boot
- process and then a 'click' came from the speaker and then it hung. I
- have seen problems with bootup when SCSI devices which were not on at
- bootup but only my internal hard drive was connected at boot time and
- even one of the times when it was read properly, the system hung.
- Obviously it looks like a hardware problem and I'm taking it in for
- (warrenty) repairs but I thought I'd post to get feedback and other
- people's experience.

- Apple sent out a service alert on 8/27 with regards to an intermittent
- problem during the bootup sequence of a Mac II equipped with an internal
- 20SC. I don't know if your drive is 20 meg, but if so it may need a new

- U12 is printed on the board. Once the chip has been identified, look for

- The drive EPROM chip is Apple part number 927-0002. Hope this helps

-
- Uh, depends on what you're scanning.
-
- If all of your scanning is stuff from books, magazines, photographs, and
- the like, then get Thunderscan (or better). They give you very good
- quality from printed material. Unfortunately, you're limitted to
- pictures. If you wanted to scan something other than a picture, you
- would not be able to do it.
-
- Video scanners give you the flexibility, but at a major cost in quality
- of the image. I used MacVision (and, admittedly, not a good camera) to
- try to capture a photograph. It was very difficult to set up and the
- quality of the final scan was not as good as Thunderscan would have
- been. However, I also set up the camera on the roof of a building and
- got some good shots of the Long Island Sound with the Throgs Neck Bridge
- in the background, something that would be annoying to do with
- Thunderscan, as I would have to take a photograph and then scan that.
-
- One curiousity, for those of you who may have tried this with MacVision:
- I just recently received a very nice four-head VCR. The feature of the
- four heads is that when I hit Pause, it does not shake and the image is
- still very good on the screen. Anyone know what to expect when I feed
- the image to MacVision? (Just so I know what to expect so I don't get
- too disappointed.)

- Subject: Re: Ticking Mac
- Date: 10 Sep 87 08:34:43 GMT

-
- Some time ago I found the same problem. Since my home mac is slightly
- different from the standard mac (It has a series stabilized PSU i.s.o. a
- concept with flyback transformer) the problem could be heard a bit
- better. After some investigation I found out that there were "dips" in
- the 12 volt Power Suply Line. When expirimenting with internal and
- external drives, Standard Sony and 3rd Party Drives the following
- conclusion came up: After Reset the power dips occured when a disk drive
- (Sony Only) was attached to the Mac, no matter if it was internal or
- external. With a 3rd Party drive (don't remember the brand anymore)
- these problems did not occur. This is because the mac is looking for a
- drive to use, and tries to select the internal or external drive, thus
- making the Enable line active.
-
- When the drive is running/spinning (Sony drive, further refferenced as
- "the drive") , no dips in the 12 V. line. (because the drive is
- selected continiously) When the system has started upp (i.e. system
- loaded) the problem still occurs, but may dissapear after some twiddling
- with the drive lines (CA0, CA1, CA2, Select, Enable ). This was done
- using a disk-drive diagnostic utility.
-
- The problem lies in the fact that every time the line Enable is
- activated a dip on the 12 volt line occurs. It seems that the 12v line
- is shortcutted for a very short time (+/- 1 ms). This results in a high
- current floating through the 12 volt line and has impact on the rest of
- the mac, wherefrom you hear the "click tik ticking". The frequency you
- described is the same as the one I noticed. This points probably to a
- faulty hardware dessign (interaction) of the IWM and Sony disk drives.
- Or the Sony drive takes to much current on being enabled.
-
- The ticking and power dips / high current peaks were verified by a
- friend who's working as a repairsman with a Apple dealer, and he found
- the same things, but not as sever as with my Mac 'cause the Mac's PSU
- can give a higher peak current on their 12 v
-
- The dips seem to have no further impact on a proper working mac. The
- extra power dissipation in the PSU due to this dips (high current) is
- probably minimal.

- I asked this question once before, but got no answers. Perhaps somebody
- now knows:
- The Font/DA Movers 3.2 and later do not recognize Princeton Font. This
- font, #13, has a FOND resource which looks okay to me (I compared it to
- Geneva's, and couldn't see any problems), and its got 4 sizes as FONT
- resources.
- KeyCaps, Word and MacWrite all recognize it. But when you open FDA
- mover it looks like its not there! What gives?
- I tried renumbering the FOND and FONT's to see if there was something
- unlucky about 13, but had no luck! Anybody else have some suggestions?
-
- Thanks

- Will the REAL Inside Mac Volume V please stand up. Golly it is tough
- sometimes. The CopyBits <-> CopyPix change I could believe and figured
- it out. The use of GetNewWindow makes sense so you can color a window
- without making changes to the source code. What really threw me off
- however is: 1. The LSC, LSP, and the MPW Assembler interfaces all have a
- GetNewCWindow
- call or trap. 2. Compiling the code with GetNewWindow and Fediting
- the GetNewWindow
- opcode to GetNewCWindow worked fine.
-
- >From this I gather that the already existing Rom code will not be supported
- on direct call. Thanks to those who replied on this.

- I have a Public Domain program called Layout which does a bit of what
- you want. It's purpose is to change the default font which Finder uses
- to whatever font and point size you wish (of those installed in the
- System file, of course). Along with doing this it also allows you to
- change the default spacing for Icon and Small Icon views (horizontally
- and vertically), change the spacing and format for text views, change
- the size and location of a new window, etc.. Very useful program; I'm
- currently using Monaco 9pt instead of Geneva, since I find it easier to
- read. Using too big a font causes problems with lack of space on the
- screen. As it is if you change the attributes of your Finder, you must
- re-clean-up all your windows so as to get the spacing correct. Layout
- will allow you to revert to the normal Finder settings at any time.
-
- This won't change the Chicago font, nor will it help in programs which
- use Chicago or Geneva, but it does help on the desktop. Let me know if
- you're interested and I'll give you more info.

- I just picked up a 20M SCSI drive from MacConnection for $569, including
- cable, and I'm quite happy with it. Although you mentioned 30M, I'd
- thought I'd pass this on anyway. It is made by Rodime, sits under the
- mac, and doesn't have a fan. In fact, it looks just like the pictures of
- the Nova20 from microtech, sans logo. It is as quiet as my Dataframe and
- disktimer II results as virtually identical to the dataframe 20 (non-
- XP). It is larger, but much lighter, than the dataframe. Daisy chaining
- was no problem. Drawbacks: heat production under mac may cause the mac
- to run warmer than it would; changing address requires fiddling with
- jumpers inside. But, the price is right. Warranty is 120 days, and I
- probably don't need to mention that MacConnection has a great
- reputation.

- Is anyone out there a converted TEX user? I'm looking for information
- about the suitability of using the Mac to produce complicated,
- math-intensive documents...
-
- I am especially interested in hearing from users of 'Expressionist' and
- knowing how it compares with the use of TEX for creating mathematical
- expressions. Has anyone had any problems integrating 'Expressionist'
- files with text from another word processor? Anyone ever used it with
- Pagemaker or Ready-Set-Go?

- I am writing an application where I have a list of strings which I want
- to display and then have the user select one. I would like to use the
- type of dialog which comes up with the standard file open. I know that
- some prpgrams use this type of dialog for other than opening files. The
- problem is that I don't know if there is a resource available to
- implement it, either completely or partially, or whether I have to roll
- my own.
-
- Any hints, code, or pointers will be appreciated.
